Our story.

Matthewson & Co. is a for-profit, fee-for-service social enterprise. That means we charge the communities we work with a fee. We live and die by our ability to do work that our customers value. Our process is based on working with the community to celebrate their beautiful way of life and address the issues that get in the way of sustainability and growth. Each community and the challenges are different, so one-size-fits-all tactics don't work well.

The council contracted with Matthewson & Co. to support the Council's complex community economic development vision.  Our business specializes in this work. In the past year, our company (mostly Anna) wrote successful grants of over 7 million dollars for municipal projects. We've supported businesses to start and offered countless hours pro bono. We work in several communities simultaneously, with an office in Saskatchewan and one here.  We offer a big bang for the buck.  And a 30-day kick-out clause.  Which means we could lose our contract here at any time. And we still moved here. Bought a house. Expanded the business...invested tens of thousands because we believe this is the best place to build our business. That, and I am a sucker for a heritage home, and Roxie kindly sold us hers.

Community economic development in small populations is an extraordinary task. To do it well, the whole community must pull together to share why you are fabulous with people out there, and then convince them to spend tens of thousands of dollars in your community. It is perhaps the best job in the world. I can work anywhere and make a great living, but I chose Boissevain. Why? Because it has that vibe.
