Turtle Mountain Physiotherapy: A Local Legacy of Care in Boissevain

Turtle Mountain Physiotherapy has been part of Boissevain’s heartbeat for over 20 years. Merle Neufeld first came to town in 1998, working part-time out of a satellite office of West-Fit Physiotherapy in the Arts Council building. He split his time between Boissevain, Brandon, and the local hospital. As more people sought his care, Merle made the move to Boissevain full-time and officially opened Turtle Mountain Physiotherapy in 2001.

In the early years, Merle briefly expanded to Killarney, but by 2008, he focused entirely on Boissevain. The clinic moved to The Junction in 2016—a space designed to welcome a second therapist, host high school interns, and prepare for the future. That move made room for Taylor Robertson, who joined the clinic as a student and now works alongside Merle as a physiotherapist.

The clinic offers a wide range of services, including acupuncture and cupping. Merle is known for helping clients with complex needs and often connects them with specialists through his professional network. As Boissevain’s only physiotherapy clinic, Turtle Mountain Physiotherapy serves a wide area, drawing clients from Killarney, Deloraine, Waskada, Goodlands, Elgin, Minto, Hartney, Pierson, and Melita. Local doctors regularly refer patients, helping the clinic grow.

Merle and Marilyn Derksen chose Boissevain for its welcoming atmosphere and family ties. Over the years, they've built strong relationships and supported the community through donations and prizes for local events. Their internship program has helped students explore careers in physiotherapy—Taylor's journey proves how mentorship can lead to lasting success.

The clinic employs two physiotherapists, one full-time administrative staff member, and one part-time staff member.  As he looks ahead to retirement, Merle feels confident that the clinic is in good hands. Succession planning is key to keeping the trust and care that the community has come to rely on.

Merle offers simple advice for anyone considering starting a business in Boissevain: start small, be passionate, and give yourself time to grow. He also recommends teaming with other businesses to share space and reduce costs. The people matter most to him—treating his community, building relationships across generations, and knowing his work has made a difference.

Turtle Mountain Physiotherapy isn’t just a clinic—it’s a story of dedication, care, and community.
